The WHO Academy has launched a new course on National Cancer Control Planning (NCCP) aimed at programme managers, policy-makers, technical experts, funders, and civil society partners involved in strategic cancer planning at national and sub-national levels. The course equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to develop evidence-based, context-specific, and implementable NCCPs, emphasizing alignment with broader health programmes and ministerial strategies.
Alarcos Cieza, WHO NCD Unit Head, highlighted that strong NCCPs are critical for cancer prevention, treatment, and improving patient well-being, and the course provides practical guidance for creating costed, actionable plans.
Globally, while 80% of countries have NCCPs, only 30% include prevention strategies, 48% set SMART objectives, and three-quarters remain unfunded, affecting cancer service delivery.
The course covers WHO global initiatives, stakeholder management, gap analysis, costing, M&E, and data-driven programme reviews. It combines case studies, discussion boards, reflective learning, and workshops. Successful participants receive a certificate of completion.
