The World Health Organization has released its first comprehensive guidelines for managing diabetes during pregnancy, a condition affecting nearly one in six pregnancies worldwide. The new recommendations aim to reduce severe risks such as pre-eclampsia, stillbirth, and birth complications, while also addressing long-term health effects for both mothers and their children. The burden is especially heavy in low- and middle-income countries, where access to specialized care is limited.
According to WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, these guidelines establish the organization’s first unified standard for diabetes management during pregnancy. The document outlines 27 key recommendations, including tailored dietary and physical activity plans, regular blood glucose monitoring, appropriate medication protocols, and coordinated care for women with existing diabetes.
Launched on World Diabetes Day 2025, the guidelines reinforce the need for integrated, equitable maternal care and highlight the growing global challenge posed by diabetes, which now affects more than 800 million people.
