Collagen supplements are often marketed as an easy fix for aging skin, but dermatologists say the evidence behind them is weak. According to a dermatologist at Tufts Medical Center, oral collagen is not a proven treatment for skin aging and is far less effective than established skin-care and lifestyle measures.
Studies on collagen supplements have shown inconsistent results. While some research suggests minor improvements in skin hydration or elasticity, higher-quality studies have not found clear benefits. Meta-analyses indicate that positive findings are more common in lower-quality trials, many of which are industry-funded.
Another issue is how collagen is processed in the body. When consumed, collagen is broken down into amino acids, not delivered directly to the skin. Safety is also a concern, as supplements are poorly regulated and may contain contaminants.
Dermatologists recommend focusing instead on a balanced diet, adequate protein and vitamin C intake, sun protection, proven topical treatments, and avoiding smoking to naturally support collagen and skin health.
