BASF researchers have presented new work in sustainable cosmetic science covering botanical extraction, collagen repair and bio-based materials for skin care formulations. The research was showcased at the 36th International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) Congress in Perth, Australia, held from September 28 to October 1.
One of the studies explored the use of naturally derived solvents for extracting useful compounds from plants. Researchers investigated plant waters, particularly coconut water, as an alternative to conventional extraction media. According to the findings presented by BASF, the approach improved the recovery of certain polyphenols and helped enrich botanical extracts from sources such as rose and citrus. The resulting extracts also showed potential benefits for epidermal cohesion and skin-barrier resilience.
Another area of research focused on collagen-hybridising peptides, which are designed to identify damaged collagen structures. In a clinical study, BASF researchers found that a lead peptide candidate could target altered collagen, encourage procollagen I production and support processes associated with tissue repair. AI-based molecular modelling was also used during the development of the peptide technology.
BASF additionally presented collaborative research with Stanford University on bio-based polysaccharides. The study examined how these materials form films on the skin and influence moisture movement through the outer skin layer. Researchers reported that the materials could improve moisture retention, support the penetration of emollients and help maintain the skin barrier while reducing the effects associated with dehydration.
The three research projects reflect BASF’s focus on combining cosmetic performance with renewable materials and more sustainable approaches to ingredient development. The company presented the work under the IFSCC Congress theme, “Solving the Sustainable Beauty Equation.”
