Next-Generation Skin Care Turns to Biotechnology and Advanced Delivery Systems

Cosmetic science is moving into a new phase as biotechnology, sophisticated delivery systems and skin-longevity research reshape the development of next-generation skin care products.

Among the emerging technologies is RNActivate W from Biocogent, an active that uses RNA-based technology and a proprietary delivery system. It is designed to influence microRNA signals associated with visible skin ageing and support the skin’s production of collagen, elastin and other extracellular matrix proteins.

Plant-derived technologies are also gaining ground. Symrise has introduced Cellexora MD, an active based on exosomes obtained from upcycled organic apple material. These extracellular vesicles function as biological messengers and are being explored for their ability to support communication between different types of skin cells.

Delivery technology is another area attracting attention. Croda Beauty Actives’ Matrixyl Neolide uses an encapsulated peptide system engineered to provide an initial release followed by sustained delivery for up to 15 days. The approach is intended to maintain peptide availability over a longer period rather than relying solely on short-term application.

Sunscreen formulation is advancing as well. Inolex has launched LexFeel Enhance MB, a technology developed to help formulators incorporate bemotrizinol into stable sunscreen products while maintaining desirable sensory characteristics.

Alongside these developments, cosmetic companies are exploring fermentation-derived peptides, microbiome-supporting ingredients, biomimetic materials and biotechnology-produced actives.

The trend reflects a broader change in cosmetic formulation. Product development is increasingly combining biological research with advanced ingredient engineering, controlled delivery and measurable performance, creating skin care formulations that are more targeted and technically sophisticated than conventional cosmetic products.
