The Association of German Engineers (VDI) has released a new draft guideline, VDI 2083 Sheet 22: Measurement of Condensable Airborne Substances, as part of its cleanroom technology series. This guideline outlines a standardized method for sampling and analyzing condensed chemical contaminants on surfaces—critical for ensuring process and product integrity in manufacturing environments. While contamination in liquid process media is excluded, the document applies to all production and storage areas where chemical surface cleanliness affects quality. It particularly addresses organic contaminants such as silanes and siloxanes. The 20-page draft details definitions, sampling and analytical techniques, materials, and equipment, including thermal desorption systems. It also explains measurement procedures, result calculation, and reporting requirements. Appendices provide guidance on measurement uncertainty and limit value safety assessment. Designed to help users evaluate and improve surface cleanliness, the draft can be accessed through DIN Media for review and industry feedback.
