California Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Recalled Eggs

California health officials report that 63 people have fallen ill with Salmonella Enteritidis infections linked to eggs from Vega Farms Inc., with 13 patients requiring hospitalization. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has warned consumers and food businesses not to eat or use the recalled Vega Farms in-shell brown eggs.

The eggs were distributed to grocery stores, restaurants, co-ops and farmers markets throughout Northern California. Officials are concerned the products may still be in homes and businesses because the sell-by date runs through December 22. Inspections by state health and agriculture agencies found multiple egg and environmental samples positive for Salmonella, including the outbreak strain confirmed through genome sequencing.

The recall covers brown eggs with handler code 2136, Julian dates 328 and earlier, and sell-by dates of December 22 or earlier, sold in various consumer and foodservice packages. Anyone who develops symptoms such as diarrhea, fever or abdominal cramps after eating the eggs should seek medical care, particularly those at higher risk of severe illness.
