Several Andalos brand and unbranded pastry products are being recalled in Canada after being linked to a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 52 people. The affected pastries, including various baklava, knafeh ashta, knafeh nabulseyeh, qatayef, znoud el sett, and cheaibiyet, contain pistachios identified as the outbreak source. Other recalled items include Habibi brand Pistachio Kernel, Habibi Food Centre brand Pistachio, and Dubai brand Pistachio & Knafeh Milk Chocolate.
Cases have been reported in Quebec (39), Ontario (9), British Columbia (3), and Manitoba (1), with nine hospitalizations. Illness onset dates range from early March to mid-July, affecting patients aged 2 to 89. Tracing and testing linked the outbreak strain to Habibi brand pistachios. Due to long reporting delays—15 to 55 days—more cases may emerge. Actual infection numbers are likely far higher, as many mild cases go untested. Health officials urge consumers to avoid recalled products and discard any in their possession.
