The consumption of processed foods has grown significantly due to urbanisation, nuclear families, dual-income households, and the convenience of ready availability and delivery. At the same time, consumers are becoming more conscious of what they eat, driving demand for “clean label” products—foods made with simple, recognisable ingredients and minimal processing.
Although there is no formal definition, clean label foods are typically associated with natural ingredients, absence of artificial additives, and transparent labelling. Key features include fewer familiar ingredients, no synthetic colours or preservatives, clear sourcing information, and minimal processing methods.
Natural sources such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables play a vital role, offering fibre and beneficial compounds. Plant extracts are also widely used for natural colours, flavours, and preservation. Traditional options like salt, sugar, and fermentation continue to serve as effective clean-label preservatives.
Despite challenges like cost, scalability, and ingredient stability, clean label products present strong growth potential. Increasing consumer awareness is encouraging innovation in natural, functional, and health-focused food ingredients.
