FDA Issues Warning Over Norovirus Outbreak Linked to Korean Oysters

The FDA has issued a public health alert following reports from the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food of a norovirus outbreak linked to frozen, raw, half-shell oysters imported from the Republic of Korea. The affected oysters, processed by JBR KR-15-SP and harvested on January 12, 2025, from Designated Area No. 1 (Lot Code: B250112), were distributed to restaurants and retailers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Montana, and Utah, with possible further distribution.

Consumers are urged to verify the product's origin and lot number before purchase or consumption. The oysters may remain in circulation due to use-by dates extending to 2027. Wang Globalnet, Vernon, CA, has issued a recall. Norovirus symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever, appearing 12–48 hours post-exposure. The virus spreads easily and can persist on surfaces. Proper handwashing and sanitation with bleach-based disinfectants are key to prevention and limiting transmission.
