Frozen Shrimp Recalled Due to Possible Cesium-137 Contamination

Direct Source Seafood LLC of Bellevue, Washington, is recalling about 83,800 bags of frozen raw shrimp imported from Indonesia over concerns they may be contaminated with cesium-137 (Cs-137), a radioactive isotope. The shrimp were sold nationwide under the Market 32 and Waterfront Bistro brands.

Cesium-137 is a man-made radioactive material, and repeated low-level exposure through contaminated food may increase the risk of cancer by damaging DNA. While no illnesses have been reported, officials warn consumers not to eat the recalled products.

The recall includes 1-lb Market 32 shrimp sold at Price Chopper stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont, and 2-lb Waterfront Bistro shrimp sold at retailers such as Albertsons, Safeway, and Jewel-Osco across several states. Best-by dates extend into 2027, raising concerns that products may still be in home freezers.

The contamination has been linked to radioactive material detected in shipping containers from Indonesia, traced to an industrial accident involving scrap metal processing near Jakarta.
