La Guadalupana Foods LLC, based in Chicago, Illinois, has recalled 2,669 pounds of frozen tamales due to mislabeling and the presence of an undeclared allergen, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The recalled products are bean, cheese and jalapeño tamales that were incorrectly labeled as mild pork tamales. As a result, the packaging does not declare milk, a known allergen found in the cheese.
This poses a serious health risk for individuals with milk or dairy allergies, who could experience severe or potentially life-threatening reactions. FSIS has expressed concern that some of the product may still be stored in restaurant or household freezers because of its long shelf life, with a best-by date of October 8, 2026.
The affected items were shipped to retail and restaurant locations in Illinois, Iowa, Ohio and Wisconsin. The issue was identified after a restaurant reported the labeling discrepancy. No illnesses have been reported so far, but consumers with concerns are advised to seek medical advice.
