Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has urged States and Union Territories to step up enforcement and enhance inspection systems during the 49th Central Advisory Committee meeting held in Gangtok. The meeting brought together food safety officials, industry representatives, and stakeholders to strengthen India’s food safety framework.
FSSAI CEO Rajit Punhani highlighted the need for stricter on-ground action, especially in high-risk categories such as dairy products, edible oils, spices, and honey. He encouraged risk-based inspections, continuous surveillance, and strict action against non-compliant food business operators, along with public disclosure to improve accountability and consumer trust.
The authority also stressed filling vacancies for Food Safety Officers and technical staff to boost enforcement capacity. Additionally, states were directed to improve grievance redressal systems and adopt data-driven monitoring.
The discussions reinforced a nationwide push toward a more robust, transparent, and consumer-focused food safety ecosystem.
