The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, alongside state and Union Territory authorities, has significantly intensified food safety surveillance across India. Over 5.18 lakh food samples were tested between 2021 and 2024, leading to 88,192 penalties for violations under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The large-scale testing targeted sub-standard, misbranded, and unsafe food products, resulting in numerous civil and criminal cases against food business operators. Authorities also reported several thousand convictions in serious cases such as food adulteration, reinforcing a strict enforcement approach.
To strengthen monitoring, the government expanded laboratory capacity, including NABL-accredited facilities, and deployed mobile units like “Food Safety on Wheels” for real-time testing. Supported by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, these initiatives aim to improve both reach and scientific accuracy.
With a growing focus on preventive measures, including training and stricter licensing, India is moving toward a zero-tolerance stance on food safety violations.
