India’s sugar production has jumped 48% in the current crushing season, offering significant relief after months of worry over poor rainfall, reduced cane yields, and a possible output deficit. With mills in major producing states running at full capacity, the strong early performance has boosted confidence in a stable sugar supply for the year.
Industry experts attribute the rise to improved cane recovery rates and higher crushing efficiency in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka. A timely start to operations and favourable October–November weather helped mills outperform last year’s early-season output. Maharashtra has contributed the most to the rise, supported by better irrigation and increased cane availability in areas previously affected by weak monsoon patterns. Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka have also reported steady and stronger-than-expected performance.
Analysts believe the surge may help stabilise domestic prices and could potentially ease export restrictions, depending on production trends ahead. If the momentum continues, India may close the season with a comfortable surplus, supporting domestic needs, buffer stocks, and ethanol blending goals.
