Public Health Alert: Ground Beef Sold at Whole Foods May Contain E. coli

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for ground beef potentially contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Although not recalled, the product may still be in consumers’ homes. It was produced on May 22–23, 2025, bears establishment number “EST. 4027,” and was shipped to Whole Foods stores nationwide. The contamination was discovered after the producer reported a positive test result. No illnesses have been confirmed. FSIS urges consumers not to eat the product. E. coli can cause serious illness, and symptoms may include stomach cramps, fatigue, or more severe complications like hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which affects the kidneys. Anyone experiencing symptoms after consumption should contact a healthcare provider immediately.

The following product is subject to the public health alert:

  • 1-lb. vacuum-packed packages of “ORGANIC RANCHER ORGANIC GROUND BEEF 85% LEAN 15% FAT” with “Use or Freeze By 06-19-25” and “Use or Freeze By 06-20-25” as represented on the packaging.
