More than 40 people across Australia have fallen ill in a nationwide Salmonella outbreak linked to contaminated alfalfa sprouts. At least 44 infections have been reported—18 in New South Wales, 15 in Queensland, nine in Victoria, and two in South Australia.
Health officials have traced the outbreak to Parilla Fresh products, prompting a major recall of multiple sprout varieties, including Hugo’s and Aussie Sprouts brands. The affected items, sold in Coles, Woolworths, IGA, and other retailers nationwide, come in 125-gram packs with use-by dates up to November 20.
Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and avoid eating recalled sprouts. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include fever, stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Authorities advise seeking medical care if symptoms occur, especially for children, seniors, pregnant women, or immunocompromised individuals, who are at higher risk of severe illness.
