Salmonella Outbreak in Canada Linked to Pistachio Products

A Salmonella outbreak in Canada has sickened 52 people across Quebec (39), Ontario (9), British Columbia (3), and Manitoba (1), with nine hospitalizations. Patients, aged 2 to 89, fell ill between March and July. Public Health Canada has linked the outbreak to pistachios, prompting recalls of Habibi brand Pistachio Kernel, Al Mokhtar Food Centre Pistachio, and Dubai brand Pistachio & Knafeh Milk Chocolate, which may have been used in baked goods.

Lab tests confirmed the outbreak strain in recalled Habibi pistachios. Due to reporting delays of 15–55 days, more cases are expected. Experts warn actual infections may be far higher, as mild cases often go unreported.

Salmonella symptoms—diarrhea, cramps, and fever—appear 12–72 hours after consumption. Severe cases may require hospitalization, particularly in children, seniors, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals. Anyone who has consumed recalled products and developed symptoms should seek prompt medical care and mention possible Salmonella exposure.
