Tri-Union Seafoods Warns of Botulism Risk From Recalled Tuna

Tri-Union Seafoods has issued a warning after discovering that a third-party distributor mistakenly shipped quarantined tuna products tied to a February 2025 recall. The original recall was triggered by a manufacturing defect in the pull-tab can lids, which may weaken the seal over time and allow contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that causes botulism.

Because the affected products have long shelf lives extending into 2028, consumers may still have them at home. The company advises not to eat the tuna even if it looks or smells normal.

The recalled products were distributed to select retailers, including Meijer stores in several Midwestern states, Giant Foods in Maryland and Virginia, and Safeway, Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions in California. Specific Genova yellowfin tuna products are identified by UPC numbers, can codes, and “Best if Used By” dates printed on the bottom of the cans.

Botulism is a rare but serious illness that can cause muscle paralysis and breathing failure. Anyone experiencing symptoms after consuming the product should seek immediate medical attention.
