More than 120 people in the UK have fallen ill in a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak that early investigations suggest may be linked to imported eggs. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) detected a rise in cases in August through whole genome sequencing. A total of 123 infections have been confirmed, mostly in England, with some in Scotland and Wales. Patients range from 1 to 92 years old, with most cases occurring in children under 9. Several hospitalizations have been reported, but no deaths.
Public health agencies across the UK are tracking the outbreak and mapping the egg supply chain to pinpoint the contamination source. Several businesses have been connected to the same distributor of imported eggs.
Officials advise proper handwashing, thorough cooking, and avoiding food handling when symptomatic. Vulnerable groups should only consume eggs bearing the British Lion mark or Laid in Britain assurance. Salmonella symptoms typically include fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps within 12–72 hours.
