Union Health Ministry Reiterates Ban on Colours in Street Foods

The Union Health Ministry has clarified that the use of colours or additives in prepared foods sold by vendors—such as vegetable, chicken, and fish kebabs—is not permitted under food safety regulations. The ministry noted that using non-approved colours constitutes a violation of the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Regulations.

In a statement to Parliament, officials highlighted that under Section 29 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, state authorities are empowered to take action to safeguard public health. The issue gained attention recently after the J&K Food Authority issued a notice banning the use of synthetic colours in food products.

The ministry added that the FSSAI, through state bodies and regional offices, regularly conducts inspections, surveillance, and random sampling to check compliance. Where violations are detected, penal action is taken against defaulting food business operators to ensure consumer safety.
