The US federal government released updated Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) on Jan. 7, emphasizing whole, nutrient-dense foods and advising against highly processed items. The guidelines encourage “real foods,” including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, dairy, healthy fats, and protein from both plant and animal sources, and introduce a new food pyramid highlighting protein, dairy, and healthy fats as the largest categories.
While many, including the American Medical Association and food activists, praised the focus on unprocessed foods, the recommendations for red meat and full-fat dairy drew criticism. Experts warn these choices could increase saturated fat and sodium intake, raising heart disease risk. Harvard researchers highlighted a lack of limits on protein sources, which could lead to diets low in fiber if heavily reliant on red meat.
The guidelines replace the 2020 edition and aim to reshape American diets, but debates continue over industry influence, health risks, and the balance of protein, fat, and plant-based foods.
