A coalition of 23 states and Washington, D.C. has sued the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to block $11 billion in cuts to public health grants originally allotted during the COVID-19 pandemic. The lawsuit argues that these funds are crucial for tracking infectious diseases, supporting mental health and substance abuse services, and preparing for future pandemics.
The states warn that the cuts will lead to job losses, weaken rural hospitals, and jeopardize vaccination programs. Rhode Island, for example, could lose $31 million, potentially forcing it to disband childhood immunization programs. North Carolina faces a $230 million loss, affecting emergency services, healthcare workers, and senior care.
Plaintiffs argue the cuts are unlawful, as Congress did not restrict the funds to the pandemic’s duration. Meanwhile, HHS is undergoing a major restructuring, including 20,000 job cuts. The department declined to comment on the lawsuit.
