Bayer & Hurdle report breakthrough in aging research

Bayer and Hurdle have introduced a groundbreaking saliva-based DNA methylation biomarker, InflammAge, designed to quantify systemic chronic inflammation (SCI) and track aging-related epigenetic biomarkers. This innovative, non-invasive method provides an alternative to traditional blood- or tissue-based techniques for assessing biological aging.

The study, conducted by scientists from Hurdle, Bayer, and leading academic institutions, highlights the strong association between InflammAge and health outcomes such as mortality, lifestyle factors, and age-related diseases. The research, involving over 18,000 participants from Generation Scotland, suggests InflammAge outperforms blood markers like C-reactive protein (CRP) in predicting long-term health risks.

The study also shows that lifestyle factors, such as smoking and alcohol consumption, accelerate InflammAge, while healthy habits like consuming oily fish decelerate it. This discovery emphasizes the importance of lifestyle changes in managing chronic inflammation and aging.

Bayer and Hurdle aim to revolutionize preventative healthcare by leveraging this biomarker to guide personalized care.
