Limiting meals to an eight-hour daily window significantly reduced disease activity in adults with Crohn’s disease, according to a randomized trial funded by the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation. The 12-week study, led by researchers at the University of Calgary and published in Gastroenterology, found that time-restricted feeding lowered disease activity by 40% and reduced abdominal discomfort by 50% compared with usual eating patterns.
Participants following the 8-hour schedule lost about 5.5 pounds on average, while the control group gained weight. Blood markers linked to inflammation, including leptin and PAI-1, also declined. Importantly, no calorie restriction was required, and both groups consumed similar diets.
Researchers say the findings suggest meal timing alone may influence immune and metabolic pathways. However, larger studies are needed, and patients with inflammatory bowel disease should consult healthcare providers before trying intermittent fasting.
