Doctors Warn of Severe Health Risks from Counterfeit and Substandard Medicines

Medical practitioners in India are raising alarms over counterfeit and substandard drugs, particularly in West Bengal. These fake medications pose serious health risks, causing harmful side effects and even organ damage. Experts warn that counterfeit drugs lack proper active ingredients, rendering them ineffective and potentially life-threatening.

Physicians urge central and state regulators to implement strict measures to eliminate these fake drugs. Counterfeits may trigger allergies, organ failure, seizures, and even cardiac arrest. They also contribute to drug-resistant diseases, increasing mortality rates. Lifestyle conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases can worsen if ineffective medicines are consumed.

Regulatory bodies must strengthen monitoring and enforce strict penalties against those distributing counterfeit medicines. Pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk recently issued a warning about fake Ozempic injections, underscoring the widespread issue. Public awareness is crucial to preventing the circulation and use of these dangerous drugs.
