Economic Crisis and Lasting Impact on Child Nutrition

Economic Crisis and Lasting Impact on Child Nutrition

The Asian Financial Crisis had long-term consequences on child health, particularly in Indonesia, where rising rice prices significantly affected nutrition. A study by researchers at the University of Bonn found that sharp food price increases during the crisis contributed to higher rates of stunted growth among children.

The research showed that children exposed to these price shocks experienced chronic undernutrition, with a noticeable rise in stunting. Surprisingly, the same group also faced a higher risk of obesity later in life. Experts suggest this may be due to reduced consumption of nutrient-rich foods, leading to hidden deficiencies despite sufficient calorie intake.

The effects were more severe in urban households and among families with lower education levels. The findings highlight the importance of targeted nutrition policies during crises to protect children’s development and long-term health outcomes.
