MedTech Europe Urges Tariff Relief to Safeguard Patient Care

MedTech Europe has raised concerns that the new U.S.-EU trade framework risks harming healthcare systems by imposing tariffs on medical technologies. The agreement, finalized in July, introduced a 15% tariff on most EU exports to the U.S., which took effect on August 8. However, the deal omitted specific exemptions for medical devices and critical components, a gap the trade body described as “alarming.”

The group emphasized that additional costs and supply chain disruptions caused by tariffs could weaken healthcare resilience and ultimately compromise patient care, stressing that “patients cannot be collateral damage in trade disputes.” Siemens Healthineers and Philips, two leading European MedTech companies, have already revised their financial projections. Siemens anticipates up to €250 million in added costs, while Philips expects up to €200 million. MedTech Europe is urging negotiators on both sides to establish tariff-free trade for medical technologies to protect patients and innovation.
