Cannabis-infused beverages may offer a potential harm reduction strategy for people looking to cut back on alcohol, according to research from the University at Buffalo. The study, published in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, surveyed 438 adults who had used cannabis in the past year.
Among participants, nearly 56% also consumed alcohol. Those who used cannabis beverages were more likely to substitute them for alcohol (58.6%) compared with users of other cannabis products. Respondents reported reducing average weekly alcohol intake from 7.02 to 3.35 drinks after starting cannabis beverages, with fewer binge episodes. About 62.6% said they reduced or stopped drinking altogether.
Lead author described cannabis beverages as a new approach to alcohol harm reduction. Co-author suggested the familiar social experience of holding a drink may make cannabis beverages an easier substitute in social settings.
