Thirty-Six UK Infants Fall Ill After Contaminated Baby Formula Recall

Thirty-six infants across the UK are suspected to have developed food poisoning after consuming baby formula contaminated with cereulide, a toxin. The affected products, manufactured by Nestlé and Danone, were recalled after the contamination was identified.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said the reported symptoms — including vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach cramps — are consistent with cereulide exposure. All affected children are aged one or under, and none are believed to be seriously ill. Officials noted that current surveillance data does not show an unusual rise in vomiting cases among infants for this time of year.

The recalled Danone product is an 800g pack marked EXP 31-10-2026. Several Nestlé SMA infant and follow-on formulas are also affected, with batch details listed on the company’s website.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said the toxin was traced to arachidonic acid oil, an ingredient added to formula for nutritional benefits. Parents are advised to stop using the affected products and seek medical advice if concerned.
