The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has advised caution for travellers to Cape Verde after identifying 118 cases of shigella and 43 cases of salmonella linked to visits since 1 October. Four British tourists have died within months of contracting gastrointestinal infections while holidaying in the West African island nation.
Shigella and salmonella are bacterial infections that cause diarrhoea, fever and stomach cramps. While most people recover within a week, severe complications can affect young children, older adults, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems.
The majority of cases were associated with the resort areas of Santa Maria and Boa Vista. Officials advise visitors to consume freshly cooked hot food, drink bottled or boiled water, avoid ice and unwashed salads, and practise thorough hand hygiene.
The warning comes ahead of the February half term, when travel to the popular winter destination typically increases.
