A large clinical trial suggests that while high-dose vitamin D3 does not reduce the severity of COVID-19 infections, it may have a possible role in lowering the risk of long COVID. The findings, published in The Journal of Nutrition, highlight the need for further investigation.
The VIVID Trial included over 1,700 infected individuals and additional household members across the United States and Mongolia. Participants received either vitamin D3 supplements or a placebo over four weeks.
Results showed no significant differences in hospitalization rates, symptom severity, or virus transmission between groups. However, among those who followed the supplement regimen closely, a slightly lower proportion reported persistent symptoms weeks later.
Researchers emphasize that while the findings are not conclusive, they point to a potential benefit worth exploring, especially as long COVID continues to affect millions worldwide.
