Public health officials in Idaho are investigating an outbreak of E. coli infections associated with unpasteurized raw milk. As of February 5, nine confirmed cases have been identified, including two children who were hospitalized and developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a rare but serious complication that can cause kidney failure and long-term health effects.
According to the Central Health District, the raw milk was produced by R Bar H. The dairy has voluntarily recalled all raw cow milk products and halted production while the investigation continues. Health officials are urging consumers who purchased the products to discard any remaining milk and avoid consumption.
Raw milk has not undergone pasteurization, a heat treatment that kills harmful bacteria such as E. coli, Listeria, and Salmonella. While consumption is a personal choice, officials stress the heightened risk for children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals.
Anyone experiencing symptoms such as severe stomach cramps or bloody diarrhea after consuming raw milk should seek medical care immediately.
