Advancing Down Syndrome Care: The Role of New Therapies and Holistic Support

The Indian healthcare industry acknowledges that while emerging drug therapies offer hope for individuals with Down syndrome, a comprehensive approach remains essential for long-term benefits.

Down syndrome, a genetic disorder caused by an extra chromosome 21, results in intellectual disabilities. This year’s World Down Syndrome Day theme, All About Support, highlights the need for medical, social, and caregiver assistance.

Scientists are developing drugs to enhance learning and memory by targeting brain activity, but challenges such as high research costs, ethical concerns, and limited clinical trials hinder progress. DYRK1A inhibitors and metabolic medications show promise in early research but face obstacles in becoming approved treatments. Access to advanced therapies remains a concern, particularly in low-income regions.

Beyond pharmaceuticals, alternative treatments like yoga, dietary changes, and naturopathy are gaining attention. Studies indicate that yoga improves motor skills and cognitive function. For inclusive care, integrating these approaches alongside medical advancements is crucial.
