Tamil Nadu Introduces Digital Monitoring App to Strengthen Maternal and Newborn Healthcare

The Tiruchirappalli district administration has launched a new digital healthcare application to improve medical monitoring of high-risk pregnant women, postnatal mothers and newborns experiencing health complications. The initiative aims to ensure timely medical attention and reduce preventable maternal and infant deaths.

Named the Trichy Mother-Child Monitoring App, the platform was introduced at the Government Hospital in Tiruchi by Tamil Nadu Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. K. G. Arunraj and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister S. Ramesh. The application was developed under the guidance of District Collector Pratik Tayal.

The system enables healthcare professionals to track vulnerable mothers and children through a centralised digital platform. A dedicated district-level monitoring team identifies individuals requiring additional medical supervision and uploads their details to the application.

Village health nurses and medical officers can access this information in real time, allowing them to arrange follow-up visits, coordinate medical assistance and respond promptly when complications arise. District authorities can also review patient information and monitor whether necessary healthcare services are being delivered.

The initiative particularly addresses gaps in maternal and newborn care caused by missed prenatal examinations, delayed medical consultations and inadequate postnatal follow-up. By improving communication between healthcare teams, the platform seeks to provide more consistent medical supervision throughout pregnancy and after childbirth.

The launch forms part of Tamil Nadu's broader efforts to integrate digital technology into public healthcare services. The state is also expanding digital initiatives such as Nalam AI, a WhatsApp-based service designed to improve access to government healthcare facilities.
