CDC Reinstates NIOSH Staff After Reversing Planned Layoffs

The Trump administration has reversed planned layoffs at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), reinstating hundreds of employees whose jobs were cut during a federal workforce downsizing last year. Affected workers received notices this week confirming that their earlier reduction-in-force letters had been withdrawn, according to agency sources. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has confirmed the move.

NIOSH, part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, plays a critical role in preventing workplace injuries and illnesses, including setting chemical exposure limits, certifying respiratory protection such as N95 masks, and supporting first responders. The agency employed around 1,000 staff nationwide at the end of 2024.

The earlier cuts—initially targeting nearly 90% of NIOSH’s workforce—sparked strong opposition from labour groups and lawmakers. While some employees have since moved on, others plan to return despite concerns over future funding and ongoing legal challenges surrounding the layoffs.
