Soil-Carbon Payments Reach More Than 2,500 Farmers in Punjab and Haryana

India’s agricultural carbon market has begun translating sustainability practices into direct financial benefits for farmers, with more than 2,500 growers in Punjab and Haryana receiving over ₹2.9 crore in soil-carbon payments.

The payments are linked to farming methods that can improve soil health while reducing the environmental impact of agriculture. Farmers involved in the programme have adopted practices including direct-seeded rice, reduced tillage and better management of crop residues. Such approaches can help retain carbon in the soil and reduce dependence on conventional cultivation methods.

The development marks a shift from discussions around agricultural carbon markets towards payments reaching individual farmers. The initiative recognises farmers for adopting practices that contribute to soil-carbon improvement and broader environmental goals.

Punjab and Haryana are major agricultural regions, particularly known for their contribution to rice and wheat production. Intensive cultivation in these states has also raised concerns around soil degradation, groundwater use and crop-residue management. Sustainable alternatives are therefore receiving greater attention as farmers and agricultural institutions look for ways to maintain productivity while improving resource efficiency.

The soil-carbon programme also reflects growing interest in creating economic incentives for climate-friendly farming. Instead of treating sustainability solely as an environmental objective, carbon-based payment systems attempt to provide farmers with an additional financial return for changing cultivation practices.

The latest payments indicate that carbon farming is beginning to develop beyond pilot discussions and policy proposals in India. As similar programmes expand, their long-term progress will depend on accurate measurement of soil-carbon gains, reliable verification and continued participation from farmers.
