Ayurveda Day 2026 Emphasises Research, Innovation and Evidence-Based Healthcare

The 11th Ayurveda Day was observed across India and in several other parts of the world on 23 September, with the central celebration taking place in Nagpur, Maharashtra. This year's theme, “Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow,” placed particular emphasis on research, innovation, preventive healthcare and the responsible development of traditional medical knowledge.

The national programme included the release of several reports and initiatives aimed at strengthening the Ayurveda and broader Ayush ecosystem. These included the first Ayush Services Sector report, Ayush Vision 2030, and the CCRAS–AGNI Web Portal. Scientific sessions held during the programme examined the potential role of Ayurveda in healthcare, public health and addressing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases.

The celebrations also highlighted the importance of generating reliable scientific evidence around Ayurvedic practices and formulations. The Ministry of Ayush has increasingly focused on research, standardisation, safety assessment and innovation as part of efforts to develop traditional healthcare systems for contemporary applications.

Ayurveda Day activities extended beyond the main event in Nagpur. Ayush institutions, educational organisations and other participating bodies conducted health and wellness programmes, academic activities, awareness campaigns and community outreach initiatives across the country. More than 9,700 activities across 30 States and Union Territories had been reported as part of the 2026 celebrations.

The national programme also looked ahead to the development of Ayurveda towards 2047. Discussions covered ways of combining traditional knowledge with research and innovation while maintaining appropriate scientific standards.

The emphasis on evidence and innovation marked an important feature of this year's observance. Rather than focusing solely on the historical foundations of Ayurveda, the programme brought attention to research, documentation, scientific assessment and its potential applications within evolving healthcare systems.
