Ayurveda Sets Sights on Global Expansion Through Research, Quality and Innovation

Ayurveda is gaining greater attention in international healthcare and wellness discussions as India works to strengthen research, quality standards and regulatory systems around the traditional medical system.

With the 11th Ayurveda Day scheduled for September 23, the focus has increasingly shifted towards building stronger scientific evidence and creating systems that can support the wider adoption of Ayurveda. The 2026 observance carries the theme “Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow”.

A major part of this effort is the development of a long-term roadmap for taking Ayurveda to international markets. The strategy covers areas such as regulation, standardisation, research, education, international cooperation, exports, branding and medical value travel. The objective is to create greater consistency in Ayurvedic products and practices while strengthening their recognition across different healthcare systems.

India's growing role in global traditional-medicine initiatives is also reflected in the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Established in 2022 with India as the lead investor, the centre works on evidence and learning, data and analytics, sustainability, equity, innovation and technology.

The Ayush sector has also expanded considerably over the past decade. According to figures cited in the report, the sector's market increased from USD 2.85 billion in 2014 to USD 43.4 billion in 2023. Ayush exports rose from USD 1.09 billion to USD 2.16 billion during the same period.

The expansion has been accompanied by greater attention to startups, MSMEs, research institutions and international partnerships. Together, these developments are shaping India's efforts to position Ayurveda within a more standardised, research-oriented and globally connected healthcare environment.
