AYUSH Services Economy Reaches $36.92 Billion as Sector Expands Rapidly

India’s AYUSH services sector has recorded substantial growth, with its economic contribution estimated at US$36.92 billion in 2024–25, according to a new study by the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS). The report places the sector among the country’s rapidly expanding service industries, with growth extending across healthcare, wellness, employment and medical value travel.

The study estimates that the AYUSH services economy grew at a compound annual growth rate of 16.91 per cent between 2022–23 and 2024–25. It also projects that the sector could reach between US$216 billion and US$318 billion by 2047, depending on future development in infrastructure, skills, digital capabilities and international market access.

Ayurveda remains the largest contributor among the six AYUSH systems, accounting for an estimated US$17.73 billion, or nearly 48 per cent of the total sectoral revenue. Clinics and day-care centres together generated more than 71 per cent of the sector’s revenue, while wellness services such as yoga centres, spas and resorts also recorded strong growth.

The report estimates that AYUSH services directly support around 1.76 million livelihoods. Women account for approximately 43 per cent of the sector’s workforce, with their participation exceeding half of the workforce in several organised segments.

Medical value travel has also emerged as an important part of the sector. AYUSH services generated an estimated US$1.77 billion in medical value travel revenue during 2024–25. The report notes that international patients generally stay longer for certain AYUSH-based therapeutic programmes.

The study was based on a nationwide survey covering 15,914 establishments across the major AYUSH systems. It identifies quality accreditation, digital infrastructure, workforce development and international readiness as areas that could support further expansion.
