New Hybrid Mpox Strain Identified in England

UK health authorities have reported the discovery of a new strain of mpox in a person in England who had recently travelled in Asia. The strain is a combination of two known types of the mpox virus, clade Ib and clade IIb, and is currently unnamed. Officials from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) say they are still studying its significance, stressing that viral mutations are a normal process.

Vaccination remains the most effective protection against severe mpox, even though many cases are mild. The current vaccine is estimated to be 75–80% effective, and experts believe it is likely to offer strong protection against this new strain, despite the lack of specific studies so far.

Health officials have urged people at higher risk, including those with multiple sexual partners or who attend sex-on-premises venues, to ensure they are vaccinated. Globally, nearly 48,000 mpox cases have been confirmed in 2025, with most reported in central Africa.
