NIHR Strengthens Focus on Men’s Health Through Research Investments

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) has reaffirmed its commitment to men’s health, outlining key research priorities under the government’s national Men’s Health Strategy. The strategy emphasizes prostate cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention. In 2024/25, the NIHR invested £44 million in cancer and £69 million in mental health research.

Building on successes like the STAMPEDE trial, the NIHR is co-funding the £42 million TRANSFORM trial with Prostate Cancer UK, aiming to improve screening outcomes and tackle inequalities by ensuring at least 10% of participants are Black men. Community-focused initiatives such as the Man Van Project and a £3 million programme to modernize primary care screening are also supported.

In mental health, the NIHR will fund targeted studies to reduce inequalities and improve outcomes, including up to 10 Mental Health Research Groups addressing high-burden areas and interventions to prevent male suicide. These efforts aim to advance research, improve care, and reduce disparities in men’s health.
