Weight-Loss Injections May Lead to Rapid Weight Regain

New research suggests people stopping GLP-1 weight-loss injections, such as Mounjaro and Wegovy, may regain weight up to four times faster than those ending conventional dieting. Studies show patients can lose roughly 20% of body weight on the jabs but regain about 0.8 kg per month after stopping, returning to pre-treatment weight in around 18 months.

The drugs mimic the hormone GLP-1, which regulates appetite. Prolonged use may reduce natural GLP-1 production and sensitivity, causing intense hunger once treatment ends. Experts warn that relying solely on the injections without lifestyle changes can exacerbate weight regain.

Approximately 1.6 million UK adults used the jabs in the past year, with millions more interested. Health professionals stress that obesity is chronic, and ongoing treatment, alongside diet and exercise, is often needed to maintain weight loss and reduce health risks.
