Yoga is increasingly becoming a shared community activity in Chennai, with practitioners taking their sessions beyond conventional studios and into workplaces, beaches and other open spaces. The trend reflects a growing interest in making yoga part of everyday routines while also creating opportunities for people to practise together.
Antara Yoga founder Shreya Krithivasan said the community was created to offer a more personalised approach to yoga. According to her, yoga can address several aspects of wellness, including strength, flexibility, endurance and stress management. She also noted that the practice has become particularly popular among younger people looking for ways to relax and disconnect from demanding work schedules.
Workplace yoga is also gaining traction, with sessions designed to help employees unwind during busy working days. Weekend beach sessions have provided another setting for practitioners, while rooftop yoga is being planned to offer participants the opportunity to practise outdoors.
For some practitioners, the experience has changed their understanding of yoga. Rather than viewing it simply as a form of exercise or a way to improve flexibility, they now see it as an opportunity to become more aware of their bodies and mental state.
Participants also pointed to the role of community in maintaining consistency. Practising alongside others can provide encouragement and accountability, while people at different stages of their yoga journeys can learn from one another.
As these groups expand, yoga in Chennai is taking on a more social dimension, combining physical practice with mindfulness, interaction and personal development.
